What Is A Diamond Shape?

Shape refers to the geometric outline and overall physical shape of a diamond. Each diamond shape has its own specific characteristics that play an important role in the overall appearance of the stone.

The international unit of weight, used for measuring diamonds and gemstones. 1 carat is equal to 200 milligrams, or 0.2 grams.

Color

Diamond Color

L color: L-color diamonds are considered to be in the "near colorless" range. This means that while there may be a slight tint of color, it's typically not very noticeable to the naked eye, especially when viewed in isolation.

K color: The first of the "faint" color grades, meaning color may be detectable to the naked eye. K-color diamonds can offer great value.

J color: The last of the "near-colorless" grades, color may be slightly detectable to unaided eye, particularly in fancy shapes/diamonds over 1-carat.

I color: Color may be only slightly detectable upon close examination. Exceptional value.

H color: This is considered within the "near-colorless" range. Color is only noticeable when compared to much higher color grades. Excellent value.

G color: The highest "near-colorless" grade. Color may be detectable when compared to much higher "colorless" grades. Excellent value.

F color: A "colorless" grade appreciated best set in platinum or white gold. Faint color detectable by a trained gemologist.

E color: A "colorless" grade appreciated best set in platinum or white gold. Traces of color difficult for even trained eye to detect.

D color: Highest, absolutely "colorless" grade, appreciated best set in platinum or white gold. Exceptionally rare.

SI1: Inclusions easily detectable at 10x but not with the naked eye.

S12: Diffuse inclusions, easily identifiable at 10x but not with the naked eye.

VS1: Inclusion very difficult to spot in 10x by an expert.

VS2: Inclusion difficult to spot in 10x by an expert.

VVS1-VVS2: Almost pure, extremely small and decentralized inclusion.

Price

L/W ratio

The L/W ratio (length/width) indicates the proportion between the length and width of a diamond when viewed from above. A value of 1 represents a diamond with symmetrical proportions, ideal for round or square cuts. A higher value indicates a more elongated diamond, such as a pear or oval cut. If the diamond has a high L/W ratio, it will have a more elongated shape compared to a diamond with a lower ratio, which may be more balanced or squared.

Fluorescence

Diamond, subjected to ultraviolet (UV) light, has a luminous reaction. Usually, diamond emits blue light. This characteristic can be weak or strong and can slightly affect the appearance of the diamond.
